How to Access Stories of Ourselves Online: The Best Sites to Read and Download the Anthology for Free

The political philosophy of human rights was at the centre of attempts to revise the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). As we shall see, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights formulated by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948 was a major political document within the context of World War II. In this regard, it replaced the League of Nations Covenant on Human Rights. This text, the product of the free world's political will, was destined to become the most important instrument of humanism, progress and democracy. To ensure the development of all human beings in a fair and equitable manner is to increase the individual's understanding of his or her own dignity. Respect for human rights, therefore, is the great instrument for the development of an authentic civilization, which may be called humanism. The first and the most elementary expression of human dignity is that of the dignity of the human person. Not only is the self-esteem of human beings or of groups of people an element of human dignity, but also the poverty or political and material slavery of others is in itself an affront to dignity.

277. The social and political conflicts which we have been witnessing in Latin America have shown that the traditional project of modernity, which meant a constant advance in the degree of individual freedom and free enterprise, has been an illusion. The widespread use of new techniques of economic, social and political integration has generated an unprecedentedly rapid pace of economic growth in the past few decades, but it has not led to the expected development of social bonds and shared values. On the contrary, it has made those bonds fragile and its values vague, because they are based on the centrality of the individual and his or her interests. Modernity has become a shambles. Its religious forms have collapsed. It has become a world without traditional values, without a sense of a common good for all, without even the beginnings of an ideal community. Economic and social integration has fragmented society.
